It can be defined as an organization of persons with legal independence, whose decisions and agreements are given the value of acts of will, with the power to dispose and bind their assets.The Right of Association is recognized in article 54 of the Constitution of the Republic.

The inscription in the Registry of Associations determines its legal personality. Its legal existence will be accredited with the certification issued by the Registry where it is registered (article 18 of the Associations Law) which indicates the constitutive nature of its registration.There are national associations in Cuba, registered in the MINJUS and provincial ones registered in the Justice Offices of the People's Power Bodies.

The associations that may be constituted according to Law 54 are the following:

  1. Scientific or technical, which pursue with their work to contribute to the development of research and the application of the achievements of science and technology;
  2. cultural and artistic, which intend to promote and develop artistic education, the vocation for the creation and cultivation of art and culture;
  3. sports, whose purpose is the development and practice of sports, as well as physical education and recreation;
  4. of friendship and solidarity, which intend to develop friendly relations between peoples and the study of their history and culture;
  5. and any others that, according to the Constitution and this Law, propose social interest purposes.
