  • On April 27, 1971, the "self-criticism" of the poet Heberto Padilla took place at the Uneac headquarters, who was released that same morning after thirty-seven days in prison. His words at the time were broadcast through Prensa Latina and published as a supplement in the double number 65-66 of Casa de las Américas magazine.

Fifty years after that night, the Casa de las Américas and Uneac publish an extensive compilation that aims to offer those interested little-known evaluations and points of view that totally or partially contradict some of the stereotypes that have circulated and are circulating about the "Padilla case ".

Prepared and prefaced by Abel Prieto and Jaime Gómez Triana, the compilation includes the "self-criticism" as published in the Casa de las Américas magazine supplement, the three letters sent to Fidel - the one from the Mexican PEN Club and the two that were prominently signed Latin American and European intellectuals–, the crossed letters between Vargas Llosa and Haydee Santamaría and many other texts published both in Casa magazine and in publications of the time.
