National Monument. Type: Natural site. The Microcycacalocoma or palm cork, as it is also known, is considered a botanical treasure because it is the only plant species that managed to survive the complex processes of petrification and mineralization that occurred on our planet millions of years ago. Of great scientific importance this plant can only be found in the province of Pinar del Río and Artemisa. This species has an aspect of a curved palm with a rough and ringed stem. Sometimes the stem has branches that end in a crown of leaves, its trunk has a smooth constitution, with some resemblance to cork. The plant has a high ecological amplitude, because it has managed to survive and adapt to the extreme ecological changes produced by the diverse and intense geological phenomena that have occurred on a planetary scale in such an extended period of time, many authors have described it as a living fossil.
